Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)
What are your legal PAT Testing obligations?
Despite popular opinion, PAT Testing is not a legal requirement in itself. However, it is recommended to satisfy 'The Electricity at Work Regulations', which states that equipment which could cause injury to personnel or visitors is well maintained, to keep it in safe condition. PAT Testing is a simple way of having your electrical equipment assessed, to certify as reasonably as is possible, that it is free for faults.
As there is no set law on PAT Testing, there is no exact figure as to how regularly you should re-test, but a rough guide would be between every 6-12 months depending on the type of device (how often it is used, how prone it is to wear-and-tear etc.) Everything from lamps and hairdryers, to computers and industrial equipment should be checked.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states that 25% of all reportable accidents include portable appliances. Therefore it makes sense to have regular PAT Testing as a way of protecting against faults and which, if caught early, could prevent such accidents.
